About the Temple

Chottanikkara, on the green south-eastern edge of Kochi, is one of the most visited Devi temples in Kerala. The goddess is worshipped as Rajarajeswari, the Supreme Mother, and devotees believe she appears in three moods through the day: as Saraswati in the morning, as Lakshmi at noon and as Durga in the evening. Mahavishnu shares her pedestal, which is why the temple rings all day with the chant “Amme Narayana, Devi Narayana”.

There are really two temples here. The upper temple, Melkkavu, holds the main shrine; down the steps, beside the temple pond, is Keezhkkavu, the shrine of Bhadrakali, where the Valiya Guruthi is performed every night. Many families come to Chottanikkara in times of trouble – for peace of mind, for a marriage, for a child or for relief from worries they cannot name – and they speak of the Devi simply as Amma.

History & Aithihyam

The goddess here is said to be svayambhu – self-manifested – in a laterite stone called the Rudraksha Shila, with Brahma, Shiva, Ganapathi, Subrahmanya and Sastha sharing the pedestal alongside Devi and Vishnu. Tradition holds that great devotees such as Adi Shankaracharya, Vilwamangalam Swamiyar, Kakkassery Bhattathiri and Chemmangattu Bhattathiri worshipped here.

A well-known legend tells of Kannappan, a tribal chief who used to offer animal sacrifices to Kali. When his beloved daughter Pavizham died, a holy man helped him see the pain he had caused other creatures. The calf he had once spared from sacrifice, the story goes, was in truth Vishnu and Lakshmi, and Kannappan spent the rest of his life in prayer at that spot. Another belief holds that the goddess of knowledge stays at Chottanikkara in the early morning and returns to Kollur Mookambika afterwards, which is why Mookambika opens later in the day.

Vilwamangalam Swamiyar is also said to have installed the west-facing Bhadrakali of Keezhkkavu, and to have seen the Devi in her full splendour on the Makam star in Kumbham – the origin, devotees believe, of the Makam Thozhal festival. An old pala tree near Keezhkkavu is studded with iron nails driven in by devotees who came seeking relief from what they felt was the hold of evil spirits. The temple is administered by the Cochin Devaswom Board.
